Keepers at Home-Power of the Tongue

Our words have power to affect us, people and situations.

As women we must understand that we have the power to build or break our husbands with our tongue and actions towards them. Words can start peace or start problems. It can give hope, joy or on the flip side it can bring hurt, fear and or anger.

The reality is that Words can shape:-

  • Thinking (positive or negative thoughts)
  • Feelings (gives confidence or makes one feel useless)
  • Situations (calm or escalate situations). Eg. With gentle words peace grows and with harsh words arguments grow.
  • The future (encouragement can push someone to succeed and constant negativity can make someone throw their hands in the air and give up).

Scripture says that words can:-

  • Bring Life or Death-Proverbs 18:21 Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.

Lesson:-Words can heal or destroy and they can encourage or crush someone’s spirit

  • The tongue is small but very powerful-James 3:5 Even so the tongue is a little member, and boasteth great things. Behold, how great a matter a little fire kindleth!

Lesson:-This little member can cause big problems. Eg a tiny spark can start a fire.

  • The tongue can be hard to control-James 3:8 But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.

Lesson:-It is very easy to say the wrong thing and things once said cannot be taken back.

Gentle words bring peace-Proverbs 15:1  A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.

Ecclesiasticus/Sirach 6:5 Sweet language will multiply friends: and a fairspeaking tongue will increase kind greetings.

Lesson:-Calm words can quell a situation, but harsh words can heat things up.

  • Words should be used to build others up-Ephesians 4:29 Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers.

Lesson:-Speak words that help, not hurt and say things that make people stronger

  • We will be held accountable for our words-Matthew 12:36 But I say unto you, That every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgment.

Lesson:-We will be judged on every thing we say and the thoughts that we have.

  • Words can hurt or destroy-Ecclesiasticus/Sirach 28:18 Many have fallen by the edge of the sword: but not so many as have fallen by the tongue.

Lesson:-Words have destroyed more people than weapons have.

  • The tongue is a fire-Ecclesiasticus/Sirach 28:10 As the matter of the fire is, so it burneth: and as a man's strength is, so is his wrath; and according to his riches his anger riseth; and the stronger they are which contend, the more they will be inflamed.

Lesson:-Angry words can spread like fire depending on how strong the anger is.

  • Gossip and speaking unadvisedly-Ecclesiasticus/Sirach 28:13 Curse the whisperer and doubletongued: for such have destroyed many that were at peace.

Lesson:-Gossip and talking behind people’s backs can ruin friendships.

  • Watch what you say-Ecclesiasticus/Sirach 5:13 Honour and shame is in talk: and the tongue of man is his fall.

Lesson:-Your words can either lift you up or bring you down.

  • Think before you speak-Ecclesiasticus/Sirach 18:19 Learn before thou speak, and use physick or ever thou be sick.

Lesson:-Think first before speaking.
